SHARK Spartan Helmet

Available from late July 2016, the new SHARK Spartan was developed using the same Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology as their top of the range model – the Race-R Pro – and, to my eyes at least, it’s a rather tasty looking piece of kit.

The science bit

CFD, as defined by Wikipedia, is:

…a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions.

In this case, the gas in question is the air around the helmet, as it and your bonce whizz along the Queen’s Highway (ideally, whilst still attached to your shoulders). All this science should mean that the aerodynamic features of the SHARK Spartan (the “SHARK skin” covers over the visor side mechanisms and a double rear spoiler with built-in air extractors) ease it’s passage through the air thus reducing wind noise and improving rider comfort through reduced buffeting and improved ventilation.

SHARK Spartan Features

The Spartan weighs in at 1,290 grams (2.84 lbs) and features a Pinlock Max Vision visor, a retractable integrated sun visor, SHARKTOOTH® compatibility (SHARK’s Bluetooth® headset – available separately), SHARK Easy Fit for spectacle wearers, a quick release visor system and, a removable and washable lining.

Colour schemes

Three colour schemes are available: red (shown above), black and silver (shown below); each with a main body featuring a carbon fibre effect finish.
